Keep your candles lasting longer with this simple routine

Keep your candles lasting longer with this simple routine

There’s something sacred about the moment you light a candle.

The soft glow, the gentle flicker, the way a familiar scent fills your home — it creates space to breathe, to pray, to simply be. At Modern Roots Candle Co., we believe these small moments matter. But what many people don’t realize is that two simple habits can completely transform your candle experience:

1Trimming your wick

Before each burn, taking just a few seconds to trim your candle wick to about 1/4 inch can make a world of difference.

A properly trimmed wick:

  • Creates a clean, even burn
  • Prevents soot and smoke
  • Helps your candle last longer
  • Keeps the flame at a safe, steady height

When a wick is too long, the flame can become large and unstable. This not only causes uneven melting (also known as tunneling), but it can also produce that dark smoke that stains jars.

But when it’s trimmed? The flame stays calm, steady, and beautiful—just as it was intended.

A Simple Rhythm of Care

There’s something meaningful about caring for the things we’ve been given.

Trimming your wick may seem small, but it’s a gentle reminder: the little things we tend to daily create lasting impact.

In the same way we prepare our hearts before spending time with the Lord, we prepare our candles before lighting them. It’s a pause. A reset. A moment of intention.

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” — Luke 16:10

Even in something as simple as a candle, there’s an invitation to slow down and be present.

How to Trim Your Wick

It’s easy:

  1. Make sure your candle is completely cool
  2. Use a wick trimmer or remove the loose part with a pinch of your fingers (make sure it’s not hot or recently blown out)
  3. Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch
  4. Remove any debris before lighting

That’s it - just a few seconds to elevate your entire experience.

The importance of burn time

Burn time isn’t just about how long your candle lasts—it’s about how well it burns over time.

To get the most out of your candle:

  • Let the wax melt edge-to-edge on the first burn
This prevents tunneling and sets the “memory” for future burns.
  • Burn for 2–4 hours at a time
Burning too short can cause tunneling; too long can overheat the wax.
  • Trim your wick every time
This keeps the flame controlled so your candle doesn’t burn too fast.
  • Avoid drafts
Airflow can cause uneven burning and shorten overall burn time.

When you follow these simple steps, your candle will burn more evenly, release fragrance more effectively, and last significantly longer.

More Than a Candle

At Modern Roots Candle Co., we don’t just create candles, we create moments of peace, rest, and connection.

So the next time you go to light your candle, take a breath. Trim the wick. Say a prayer. Let it be more than routine—let it be intentional.

A Short Prayer

Lord,
Help me to be mindful in the small things.
Teach me to slow down, to care well for what You’ve given me,
and to find Your presence in the quiet, everyday moments.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
